It's a little like turning the clock back - driving about 1 hour south down to Florence, Colorado and seeing a street of very old buildings. You have turned the clock back to the eighteen hundreds...another era. Oil was discovered here in 1881 and the boom was born. The buildings that line the street are mostly antique shops now! We discover a couple new shops we have never seen before.
The next town is Canon City:
Many locals work at the prisons in Canon City. There are 13 prisons and the Supermax Prison houses many infamous prisoners...the Unibomber, the Shoe Bomber along with many others scarey sorts. Enough about that! There are some huge old mansions in Canon City:

Here you can ride the train which follows the Arkansas River to the bottom of the Royal Gorge or you can drive to the Royal Gorge. We have ridden the train several times and it is delightful.
I also took a picture of the Queen Anne Tea Room (above) which serves a true HIGH TEA with multiple courses with a pot of tea in the evening by reservation. (around $50.00) Beef Wellington is just one entree on this special menu. We did not go in but I could hear the laughter of ladies inside enjoying themselves! Of course you can enjoy Afternoon Tea here by reservation at a modest price with the scones, finger sandwiches, sweets and savories!
