ALL LAURA CHILDS TEA MURDER MYSTERY BOOKS READ

Scones & Bones

 I recently finished reading all 13 of Laura Child's Tea Murder Mysteries.  I really enjoyed reading "Scones and Bones" because of my own background - being born in the Old Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Virginia.  It was easy to pick up on the FICTION aspect of this mystery as Laura Child's took a spin on history and placed some of the story on the beaches of South Carolina - including the mounting of Blackbeard's head on the beach there.  I knew the correct history myself that this really took place in HAMPTON.

You will enjoy getting to know Theodosia Browning, Drayton and Haley who run the Indigo Tea Shop in Charleston, South Carolina. Just remember - this is fiction - and don't spend the whole day looking for the Tea Shop there.  Yes, two ladies have told me they did just that!

APPLE TEA COFFEE CAKE FOR "FRIENDS SHARING TEA"



Last week while visiting my elderly parents, I came across a brochure my Mom had gotten in the 1980's.   It was from the Lipton Tea Company and included 6 recipes with tea in them.  Some of you will remember how we often wrote away for free recipes - before internet days!   If you go to the Lipton Website they have quite a few recipes - although many don't necessarily contain tea but are foods to accompany tea.






Here's one of the recipes from the brochure:







APPLE TEA COFFEE CAKE:


You will need:  2 cups boiling water, 4 teabags, 1 tart apple, peeled, cored and chopped, 1 1/4 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 12 tablespoons butter, softened, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the topping: 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/3 cup flour, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 3 Tb cold butter cut into pieces and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts


Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.  In a med. bowl, pour boiling water over tea bags and brew 5 minutes.  Remove tea bags and stir in the chopped apple and 1/4 cup of the sugar.   Let stand for 1 hour and then remove the apples. Reserve 1/4 cup of the tea liquid.


In another med bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda, set aside.


In a larger bowl, mix butter and sugar until blended, adding eggs, sour cream and the 1/4 cup of tea liquid and vanilla.  Gradually beat in flour mixture and apples. Turn into a greased 9" spring form pan.  Top with crumb topping and bake for 1 hour.  Cool before removing from pan.                              Serves 10

WHEN PANSY'S BLOOM


Like most of the country, we are having unseasonably warmer weather instead of the usual springtime snows.  Everything seems to be ahead of schedule.  I spent last week in Virginia and it was warmer than usual there.  A stop at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina (necessary to fly into Patrick Henry Airport) revealed even greener views.

26th ANNUAL DAFFODIL FESTIVAL IN GLOUCESTER, VIRGINIA




I spent last week in Gloucester, Virginia visiting my elderly parents.  Yesterday as I was flying out of Patrick Henry Airport, the 26th Annual Daffodil Festival was beginning in Gloucester.  Earlier in the week, I had driven by and gotten a few photos of Brent and Becky's Bulbs - a very renown shop.  I am in a "catch up" mode now at my store so will just leave you with these photos to enjoy!

BLARNEY SCONES FOR YOUR IRISH TEA PARTY - Friends Sharing Tea

Here is an idea for your Irish Tea Party!  These Blarney Scones were fun to make and taste delicious. Last night after dinner I made them from a recipe found in the March/April Issue of Tea Time Magazine 2007.



You might like to purchase a shamrock cookie cutter for this project...










Here is what you will need to make the scones:  1/3 cup plus 1 1/2 Tb butter softened, 1/2 cup sugar - plus 1 Tb divided, 1/2 Tsp vanilla extract, 1 1/2 cups cake flour, 1 1/4 cups bread flour, 2 1/2 tsp baking powder,1/2 cup dried currants, 1 cup heavy cream - plus 2 Tb divided and 1 Tsp ground cinnamon (I did forget this)



Preheat your oven 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  In a medium bowl, using a mixer, blend these: butter, 1/2 cups sugar and vanilla.  In another bowl, sift flours and baking powder (I did reduce mine to 2 Tsp. because of high altitude)  Fold in the currants and then add to the butter mixture alternately with 1 cup cream.  Beat on low speed mixing well.

You will roll your dough out on a floured surface to 3/4".  I used the shamrock cutter on some and the round scone cutter for others and got about 20 scones.  You will brush the tops with the 2 Tb cream and sprinkle with 1 Tsp sugar and the cinnamon - what I forgot to do!  Bake about 15 - 18 minutes.




My grandmother made me the green tablecloth and napkins when I was first married.  I told her I had some olive green very pastel china but she had bright green thread.  Being a frugal woman, she was going to use what she had so I always use this for St. Patrick's Day and anything with an Irish theme!


If you are decorating for an Irish Tea Party - you might be surprised how many green things you can find at your house!

A NEW TYPE OF WIRE TEA SET DISPLAYER


Last week I got a new wire tea set displayer which is interesting and I am sure it could be used different ways.



Although I may live to regret this, I did not keep the above basket!



I have been so disappointed that a number of companies have quit producing cup and saucer displayers - especially the tabletop ones.
Many of the wall types have been discontinuted as well!


















Have you ever regretted not buying something in an antique mall or at a yard sale.  You go back, and it is gone.....right now if you see a holder for cups and saucers - you better buy it!
